A SWAT response to a welfare check in Massillon ended in tragedy Monday evening when a 34-year-old man died by suicide, authorities said.

Officers with the Massillon Police Department were called around 5 p.m. May 12 to a residence in the 1000 block of 3rd Street NE to check on the man, who appeared to be in distress. As the situation escalated, the Canton Regional SWAT Team was requested and arrived around 6 p.m. to assist.

Just before 7 p.m., the man attempted to take his own life.
