DeWine vetoes bill that would've allowed Ohio residents to set off fireworks

Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed a bill that would legalize commercial-grade fireworks in Ohio.

Senate Bill 113 would've made it possible for Ohio residents to set off fireworks on specific holidays throughout the year.

“SB 113 would be a dramatic change in Ohio law, which would make Ohio one of the least restrictive states in regard to fireworks laws,” DeWine said in a statement after vetoing the bill Friday afternoon. “For these reasons, this veto is in the public interest.”

The following holidays were included in the proposed bill:

  • Chinese New Year
  • Cinco De Mayo
  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day weekend
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day (July 3-5) and the weekends proceeding and following
  • Labor Day weekend
  • Diwali
  • New Year's Eve
  • And all other legal holidays

One of the reasons Gov. DeWine vetoed the SB 113 is because it wouldn’t require additional safety measures.
