The Cleveland Cavaliers are acquiring All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz in a blockbuster trade, according to multiple sources.
In order to acquire Mitchell, the Cavs are trading guard Collin Sexton, forward Lauri Markkanen, and 2022 first-round selection Ochai Agbaji to Utah. Cleveland will also send three unprotected first-round draft picks (2025, 2027, 2029), along with two pick swaps (2026, 2028).
Following the trade, Sexton - the Cavaliers' 2018 lottery selection (8th overall) - was reported to be signing a four-year, $72 million contract to facilitate the trade. Sexton only appeared in 11 games for the Cavs last season before suffering an ACL tear, but the 23-year-old averaged at least 20 points per game over the previous two seasons, including a career-best 24.3 in 2020-21.
Mitchell was a 3-time All-Star (2020-22) in Utah, who fully cemented their rebuilding process by trading the former 2018 All-Rookie First Teamer. Mitchell, who turns 26 next week, averaged 25.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game over 67 contests during the 2021-22 season. He will join a Cavs core that includes reigning All-Stars Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen, as well as All-Rookie First Teamer Evan Mobley.
Following their trading of All-NBA center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Jazz have hauled in 13 unprotected draft picks, including seven first-round selections (six unprotected), and three first-round pick swaps, along with two-first round selections from the reigning NBA Draft (Agbaji, Walker Kessler).
